As if a pandemic wasn’t enough, flu season is now upon us! Knowing how to protect our families has never been more important.
The average amount of people 1hospitalized from the flu and or complications from it in the United States is 200,000. The number of people who die from flu-related illnesses is 8,200-20,000.
The good news is that a lot of what we have already been practicing in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19 will also protect our families from the flu.

Keep Your Hands Clean and to Yourself
By now, everyone should be aware of the importance of frequent handwashing. The 2type of soap you use doesn’t make a difference, as long as you are washing with soap. The 3CDC recommends scrubbing your hands for 20 seconds. To help children and yourself get in enough scrub time, consider placing a one touch timer on the counter or sing “Happy Birthday” while washing.
If you are the touchy feely type, it may be a struggle, but do everyone a favor and keep your hands to yourself.
Continue to keep your distance. Keep a safe distance between your body and others when in a group setting. Stay home if you feel sick! Avoid people who are sick.
With the holidays approaching and many areas relaxing their pandemic guidelines regarding gatherings, family members may feel obligated to gather or attend regardless of symptoms because of how long they have been apart. However, the best thing you can do for your loved ones is to not attend if you aren’t feeling well or skip an invitation if a sick relative or friend insists on attending.
Cover Nose and Mouth
Cover your nose and mouth when sneezing and coughing with a tissue or into your elbow. Then whether or not your hands touched your mouth or nose, wash your hands.
Get Your Flu Shot
Getting a flu shot does not guarantee that you will not get the flu. However, it may greatly limit the severity of symptoms if you do get it. Due to allergies to certain ingredients, I am unable to get a flu shot. This has led to my being extra careful during flu season. Check the 4CDC website to see who should and shouldn’t get a flu shot.
Eat Well and Exercise
Take care of yourself!
Move your body every day! You don’t need to make room for a full cardio workout every single day, but do go for a walk, play a game of tag with the kids in your backyard, or begin your day with an energizing yoga routine.
Make healthy meal choices. Choose foods that are high in vitamin d and c. Foods that are rich in vitamin d include but are not limited to fish, yogurt, egg yolks, and oatmeal. Get your daily dose of vitamin c by consuming foods like orange juice, strawberries, kiwi, broccoli, and more!
Stock Up on Flu Season Essentials
No matter how many preventative steps you take, there is always a chance of you or a family member coming down with the flu. The following is a list of what I consider flu season survival essentials:
- Facial tissue
- Elderberry elixir/syrup
- Vitamin C
- Ice packs
- Decongestants and antihistamines
- Cough medicines
- Honey (My family uses honey as a cough suppressant because of allergies to pharmaceutical cough medicines)
- Acetaminophen and ibuprofen
- Jar of mentholated rub
